Memorial family portrait

Family Portrait With a Loved One Who Has Passed Away

For many families, the hardest part of a new family picture is the person who is missing. Portrait Masterpiece lets you paint everyone together: a photo of the loved one you have lost, alongside photos of the family today, in one portrait.

Because everyone is painted in the same style, an old print and a recent phone photo can sit side by side far more naturally than in a photo edit. It is a quiet, dignified way to keep them in the picture.

How it works

Three steps, about a minute

  1. 1

Find the clearest photo of them

Any era works — a scanned print, a wedding photo, a holiday snapshot. Choose the one where their face is clearest and the expression feels most like them.

  2. 2

    Add photos of the family

Upload one photo per person in the Family option: 2 to 6 photos in total, including your loved one.

  3. 3

Choose a gentle style and preview

Renaissance and Old Master styles give a timeless, dignified result; watercolor feels softer. The preview is free, so you can try more than one.

Moments when families give a memorial portrait

  • The anniversary of their passing, or what would have been their birthday.
  • A first Christmas or holiday gathering without them.
  • A wedding where a parent or grandparent is missed.
  • A parent’s milestone birthday or wedding anniversary, when one of them is gone.
  • A celebration of life or memorial service, as a canvas or print on display.

Choosing a photo of someone who has passed

  • Clarity over age. A sharp photo from decades ago works better than a recent blurry one.
  • Scan or photograph prints carefully. Lay the print flat in daylight, avoid reflections, and fill the frame with it.
  • Crop group photos. If they are small in a group shot, crop around their face before uploading.
  • Black and white is fine. You can restore the colors first with our free photo colorizer.
  • Pick the expression that is “them”. The painting keeps their features; the photo you choose decides the expression the family will live with.

Digital, print or canvas?

The digital file ($29) arrives by email right after purchase and is easy to share with brothers, sisters and cousins. A fine-art print (from $89) fits a frame you already own. A gallery canvas (from $299) is the most lasting keepsake and arrives ready to hang.

Shipping on prints and canvas is free, and canvas orders are covered by a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Many families order one canvas for the parent who is grieving and digital copies for everyone else.

Other ways to remember them

If you have many photos of them, OnReplay can also turn those photos into a short animated family film with music, often played at memorials and family gatherings. Our guide to tribute video makers compares the options.

Frequently asked questions

Can you add a deceased loved one to a family portrait?

Yes. In the Family option of Portrait Masterpiece, you upload a photo of your loved one together with photos of the other family members (2 to 6 photos in total), and the AI paints everyone in a single portrait.

Can I use a very old or black-and-white photo?

Yes. Scan the print or photograph it flat in daylight. The clearer the face, the better the likeness. You can also colorize a black-and-white photo first with our free colorizer.

Will they look like themselves?

The AI is designed to preserve each person’s facial features while applying the painting style, and the result depends a lot on the photo. You see a free preview before paying, and you can retry with another photo or style if something doesn’t feel right.

How many people can be in the portrait?

Up to 6 photos in total, one per person, including the loved one you are remembering.

Is a memorial family portrait a good sympathy gift?

Many families find it comforting, especially for a parent or grandparent who is grieving. If you are giving it to someone else, it can help to ask a close relative which photo of their loved one they would choose.

How much does it cost?

The preview is free. The digital file is $29, prints start at $89 and gallery canvases at $299, with free shipping on physical orders.
